Went to Covehithe this morning to look for the Honey Buzzard which had been seen for a day or two, The weather had not been very good with a strong south easterly wind and rain showers, I did manage a very brief view of the bird in flight.
I then ventured to Benacre Broad but it was very full of water making the birds a good way off. I did manage to see two Common Sandpipers, two egyptian Geese around five Ringed Plover and a mixed flock of Greylag Canada Geese and a few Barnacle geese.

Fine sunny warm weather met the three natural history groups at Carlton Marshes near Lowestoft and with so many keen eyes and ears a considerable day of finds were recorded. Two of the most notable finds we seen before the meeting began with myself witnessing a Red Kite over the visitors centre car park and Stephen Martin finding Shepherds Needle Scandix pectin-veneris beside a wheat field off Burnt Hill Lane. As per usual the Great Yarmouth group did their own thing and were already on the home straight as the main recording party had only just got to Spratts Water. Although the main interest was botany I found plenty of plant galls and some beetles and other wildlife were seen by the rest.
On the first grazing marsh we found Bog Stitchwort Stellaria uliginosa, Cuckoo Flower Cardamine pratensis and both Soft Rush Juncus effusus and Hard Rush J. inflexus. We also found Celery- leaved buttercup Ranunculus sceleratus of which we observed that the cattle had not eaten due to it’s poisonous capabilities.
Alongside the dyke we found large colonies of Water Soldier Stratoietes aloides which had thankfully survived the winter flooding after the breach of the River Waveney last November. Here too there were several Hairy Dragonflies Brachyton pratense and Janet Negal found an exuvia of one too. While we were here we saw Blue tailed damselflies Ischnura elegans including forma violacea and rufescens. A Water Vole Arvicola terrestris was also seen near to hear too.
After lunch by Round water we lost another attendee and the seven remaining carried onto the Forresters and Spratt’s Water Lane where we found an unofficial dump which, included some good garden escapes. Opium Poppy Papaver somniferum Foeniculum vulgare Fennel, Horse Radish Armoracia rusticana and Sweet Alison Lobularia maritima. We found a good selection of plant Galls too including Liparia lucens the Cigar Gall on Common Reed Phragmites australis Phyyocoptes goniothorax. on leaf margins of Crateagus monogyna ssp norvedicus. Eriophyes similis along leaf margin of Wild PlumPrunus domestica and Pontania triandrae on leaf blade of Almond Willow Salix triandra. We heard a Grasshopper Warbler Sedge Warbler and Reed Warbler and heard or saw up to six Cuckoos.
It was such an enjoyable day and this annual joint meeting is a great way of meeting fellow Naturalists from different societies. We all agreed that the membership to attendee ratio was very low but those who did attend thoroughly enjoyed it.

Red Kites and Buzzards
Spent a few days this week looking for the two Red Kites and up to six Common Buzzards at Sotterley but to no avail. I am now armed with the correct Grid refs so another visit is due soon.
I did scan the Greenfinch flock too for Hawfinches but they too were missing.
I did start of witha godd February but my luck seems to have run out.

11 members met to walk the area of South Beach Lowestoft. although the weather was bright very little of note was seen.
The group walked up the South Pier to show some of our members the Kittiwake Wall which some had never seen before. a few Turnstones were seen along with attendant Gulls.
The group then walked to Kensington Gardens returning alongthe tide line but again nothing of particular interest was found.
One member who did not attend but visited Gunton Wood instead found lots of Velvet Shank Fungus, some Puffballs and a Muntjac Deer, he also reported Snowdrops in flower.
The next meeting is the AGM the group need to elect a Secretary. any nominations to go to our temporary Secretary as soon as possible.
Notes for the annual report for 2006 have been very poor but with the records we do have a report should be published by Easter.
At the recent committee meeting Mr A. Coppng was elected an Honorary member for his major contribution to the botany records of the club and shares this honour with only two previous members. Mr Romer has been accepted onto the Committee and Mr Fisk is to be the annual report Editor. It was decided that as no Secretary was forthcoming at the AGM the role would be shared out amongst the Committee
It is hoped that the bulletin will be published soon but there is still a need for any bird records made on excursions in the latter part of the year. These should be sent to Mrs B.Barsted, the bulletin editor.
Members reported that the Great Northern Diver is still at Lake Lothing and that Snow Buntings were seen on Kessingland Beach.
Alexanders, Hogweed and Yarrow had been reported in flower during this very mild winter.
Migrating Swans
This morning at 9am 79 Swans flew north over Lowestoft I expect they are on their way home already. I am not sure of the species but they could have been Bewicks or Mutes

I wish the weather would improve. I am champing to go out and get back into the field.
Today I am reeling over a slate on my character on another web site. I have told the person responsible to P*%$ off an get his facts straight.

Happy New Year.
1st bird of the year was Starling, followed by Herring Gull.
a bit windy today but the weather is fine and settled.
The Great Northern Divers were still present locally and are always worth getting on my county list for the year.
I bird really hard in January and usually target the winter visitors and the difficult birds like Nuthatch, Hawfinch, Grey Partridge and Lesser spotted Woodpecker,
Then one can relax and get on with local Patch work again.

Last Days
Not much about really but reports of the Great Northern diver present on Oulton Broad looks good for another look.
A skien of Pink footed Geese flew over Lowestoft late last week and must have been lost in the fog
